Flying with Infants/ Toddlers through Airplane - our Experience so far! (Traveling with Infant series)

Traveling with toddlers can be an incredible experience considering you are in a way showing a glimpse of the world beyond your home to your baby.

We did our first flight journey with our baby when he was 3 months old. Only thing that kept us worried was any potential ear pain that flight might cause to him or if he starts getting cranky which may disturb fellow passengers.

However, the flight was Vistara which almost always ascends and descends smoothly so there wasn't any ear pain. Also, we tried to adjust his sleeping pattern a little so that he sleeps during flight (even if it is half way).

  • Try booking the infant flight while making the original booking as later on if you will try adding infant, you may be subjected to various issues:
    • Airlines might redirect you to your OTA (in case of OTA booking) that get your infant added through OTA as booking is managed by OTA and not airlines. Happened recently with us with Air India.
    • Airlines may charge you additional convenience fees which you would have already paid once while making the original booking. Happened recently with us with Vistara.
    • Most of the airlines don't give the option of adding infant on the web portal after making a booking without infant. Therefore, to add infants, you will have to contact their customer care. We contacted Air India through X platform to get the issue fixed.
      • However, they booked the infant ticket for the wrong flight which we missed checking. When we reached the check-in counter, they asked us to buy a new infant ticket. When we insisted, the person double checked with senior who allowed to get us a boarding pass (since the ticket was for the same day). It was one terrible experience that we had with Air India so whenever you are booking infant ticket separately, ensure that the flight details are same (PNR, Flight No. and flight timings).
  • Also, in some cases if the infant is linked to an adult, you won't be able to do the web-check-in. This is a common issue faced by passengers of major India based airlines.

    • Below is how see the error on the portal.
