My journey with Astrophotography so far - by Gaurang Aggarwal

To me, astrophotography is one of the most beautiful hobbies that exists as that connects you with this massive and beautiful universe. You can explore the millions of twinkling stars, galaxies, black holes, moon that you had only read and dreamt about. Astrophotography brings you closer to the fantasy which makes it so exciting.

While my fascination about staring at the starry sky when I was about 8 years old, I could click my first photograph of moon when I was 25. Before that I would just sit or sleep on terrace for hours adoring the beauty of stars and shooting stars, and would keenly see the astrophotography photographs shot by others.

The first photograph of moon was this shot using Nikon Coolpix which had 25x camera. Back then I didn't know any nuances of camera like aperture, focal length, shutter speed and would just rely on the automatic mode and would just aim, shoot and click whatever I desired to.

Years later I bought myself a proper DSLR Canon 80D using which I started learning nuances of photography. But that didn't help much as I couldn't focus on stars. After watching tonnes of astrophotography videos, I could understand how it is actually done.

I experimented with pointing camera to a star digitally zooming to it so that it looks perfect dot and that's when I know that the stars and sky is in focus. I experimented with shutter speed, aperture, ISO to capture the best possible photographs. Eventually I understood how time-lapse can be created using Canon 80D's internal intervalometer.

Some days back, I learnt that low ISO improves the dynamic range which means that more distant area is visible in clearer form and in focus.

Every day is an adventure in itself as you learn something new every day about astrophotography, how various elements of photography can help in getting the perfect astro photograph that you always wanted to click.

If you are like me who loves astrophotography, let's connect and share best practices among each other.
